FAQ
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging the optic nerve. Symptoms can start so slowly that you may not notice them. The only way to find out if you have glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. There is no cure, but early treatment can often stop the damage and protect your vision.
At first, glaucoma usually has no symptoms. Over time you may slowly lose side (peripheral) vision. Because it happens slowly, many people cannot tell that their vision is changing until later stages. Without treatment, glaucoma can eventually cause blindness. Sudden intense eye pain, nausea, red eye or blurry vision may signal angle-closure glaucoma — seek emergency care.
Doctors use medicines (usually eye drops), laser treatment, and surgery to lower eye pressure and protect the optic nerve. If you have glaucoma, it is important to start treatment right away. Treatment will not undo existing damage, but it can stop vision from getting worse.
FAQ
Cataract
A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye. Cataracts are very common as you get older. At first you may not notice them, but over time they can make vision blurry, hazy, or less colourful. Surgery can safely remove cataracts and correct the related vision problems.
You may notice cloudy or blurry vision, faded colours, difficulty seeing at night, glare or halos around lights, double vision, or frequent changes in spectacle prescription. These symptoms can also signal other eye problems — talk to your eye doctor if you have any of them.
Surgery is the only way to get rid of a cataract. Early on you may manage with brighter lights, anti-glare sunglasses, magnifiers or an updated spectacle prescription. Your doctor may suggest surgery when cataracts interfere with everyday activities such as reading, driving or watching TV. The cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
FAQ
AMD
AMD is an eye disease that can blur the sharp, central vision needed for reading and driving. It is a leading cause of vision loss for people age 50 and older. AMD does not cause complete blindness, but losing central vision can make faces, driving and close-up work harder.
FAQ
Paediatric
Amblyopia is poor vision in one eye that develops when the brain and eye do not work together properly. It starts in childhood and is the most common cause of vision loss in kids. Early treatment works well and usually prevents long-term vision problems. All children should get a vision screening at least once between ages 3 and 5.
